You may feel lonely, overwhelmed or stressed by the expectations and traditions that come with this time of year. But don’t worry, you’re not alone. Here are five (5) tips to help you cope and make the most of the holidays while you’re actively going through a divorce.

  • Be kind to yourself. You’re going through a major life change, and it’s normal to feel a range of emotions. Don’t judge yourself or try to suppress your feelings. Instead, acknowledge them and find healthy ways to express them. You can seek professional help if you need it, talk to a friend, or write in a journal.
  • Create new traditions. The holidays may remind you of happier times with your ex, but that doesn’t mean you have to give up on celebrating. You can create new traditions that reflect your current preferences and situation. For example, you can host a potluck with your friends, take a trip to somewhere you’ve always wanted to go, or volunteer at a local charity.   • Focus on the positive. It may be hard to see the bright side when you’re going through a divorce, but there are still many things to be grateful for.
